Governor Granholm Makes Appointments to Barrier Free Design Board

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments and reappointment to the Barrier Free Design Board: 

Richard O. Brunvand of South Haven, president of Brunvand Associates.  Mr. Brunvand is appointed to represent severely mobility limited persons for a term expiring October 31, 2007.  He succeeds Bryan Graham whose term has expired. 

Mary (Penny) Gardner, Ph.D. of Lansing, program director for Michigan Equality.  Ms. Garner is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring October 31, 2006.  She succeeds Mary K. DeCuir whose term has expired.

Donald A. Link of Monroe, utility director for Frenchtown Charter Township.  Mr. Link is appointed to represent professional engineers for a term expiring October 31, 2006.  He succeeds George Kiisskila, Jr. whose term has expired. 

Lucia M. Rios of Grand Rapids, accessibility advocacy specialist for the Lakeshore Center for Independent Living.  Ms. Rios is appointed to represent wheelchair users for a term expiring October 31, 2006.  She succeeds Eric Colthurst whose term has expired. 

Joseph B. Shelton, Jr. of Detroit, vice president of Walbridge Aldinger Company.  Mr. Shelton is appointed to represent the construction industry for a term expiring October 31, 2007.  He succeeds Carter Huffman whose term has expired. 

James H. Bogie of Jackson, building inspector for the city of Jackson.  Mr. Bogie is reappointed to represent municipal building inspectors for a term expiring October 31, 2007.

The Barrier Free Design Board has the responsibility of receiving, reviewing, and processing requests for exceptions to the barrier free design specifications, requiring appropriate equivalent alternatives when exceptions are granted, and receiving, processing, and making recommendations for barrier free design rules. 

These appointments and reappointment are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
