LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that over 200 radio and television stations will be participating in a statewide on-air fundraiser Friday, September 9 to support Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The fundraiser, organized by the Michigan Association for Broadcasters will urge Michigan citizens to donate to the American Red Cross.
 
“Clearly Michigan’s people are moved to support our brothers and sisters here at home and across the country,” Granholm said. “This unprecedented effort will help make sure the important work of the American Red Cross continues to give help and hope to those in need.”

The “Michigan Cares/Michigan Gives” drive will involve on-air fundraising throughout the day with a particular focus on the 6-9 a.m. morning drive time. 

“Michigan broadcasters, both public and commercial stations in every part of the state, have joined forces to raise as much money as possible for the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” said Karole White, President and CEO of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. “Our members have been working on fundraising projects ever since the news of the devastation was reported.

“Michigan Cares, Michigan Gives” is a statewide unified effort that we hope will touch the hearts and pocketbooks of every Michigan citizen to benefit the relief and recovery efforts of the American Red Cross.”

During the on-air fundraiser the broadcasters will be encouraging listeners to call the American Red Cross relief hotline or visit their website to donate funds. Citizens can make donations to the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-HELP NOW or by contacting their local chapter of the Red Cross.

 “Having served as a Red Cross Board member and chair for a number of years, I am still overwhelmed by the depth and scope of the Gulf states hurricane disaster,” said Paulette Granberry Russell, chair of the Mid-Michigan chapter board of directors. “The Red Cross is still providing disaster relief services in Oklahoma City, New York, and Washington D.C.  Our services will be required for years to come in the Gulf states, and I am proud Michigan volunteers and donors are stepping forward to help with what will be another long term assistance effort.”

Governor Granholm also updated Michigan’s relief efforts to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina.
 
The Michigan Army and Air National Guard has deployed more than 600 soldiers and airmen in support of hurricane efforts; the Michigan State Police has deployed almost 100 law enforcement officers to Louisiana; and the Department of Natural Resources has deployed 25 flat bottom boats and 50 certified law enforcement officers to go door-to-door in search and rescue missions.
 
Citizens continue to call the state’s hurricane relief hotline to donate goods, services, and money. Pledges of help will be cataloged and coordinated so that when the affected areas ask for particular assistance, the state can deliver immediately.  The Michigan Hurricane Helpline number is 1-888-535-6136.
