Contact:  Heidi Hansen 517-335-6397

October 3, 2005

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement on the loss of Michigan lives in the boating tragedy that occurred on Lake George in upstate New York on Sunday:

“We mourn the loss of so many Michigan lives in this tragedy,” Granholm said. “These Michigan men and women represent our Michigan family – grandparents and family members and neighbors.  A piece of our state is lost with them.  Our hearts are heavy with the sadness that comes with this loss, and we extend our sympathy to their families and friends.”

Governor Granholm was briefed on the tragedy by New York Governor George Pataki on Sunday evening, and again this afternoon.  Pataki’s staff has continued to brief the administration on the identification of the victims and assistance that is being provided to the victims’ families, as well as to those who survived Sunday’s accident.

Earlier today, Governor Granholm’s office was informed that in addition to the 20 people who lost their lives in the accident, another 27 were rescued, including the boat’s captain.  All of the victims are from Michigan.

The state of Michigan will continue to work with New York authorities to ensure that the needs of both the survivors and the families of victims are being met.
