LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today signed legislation designating a section of U.S. 24 in Monroe County as the “Fallen Soldiers of Iraqi Freedom Memorial Highway.”  The bill was sponsored by the late Representative Herb Kehrl.
 
“I am proud to sign this bill honoring Michigan soldiers who have lost their lives while protecting the safety of those of us back home,” Granholm said.  “This bill is indicative of the dedication Representative Kehrl had for his community and his state.  His desire to help others will remain an inspiration for generations to come.”
 
House Bill 4655 (Public Act 334) establishes U.S. 24 from the Michigan-Ohio border, north to the intersection of U.S. 24 and M-125 as the “Fallen Soldiers of Iraqi Freedom Memorial Highway.” The bill has immediate effect.
 
Kehrl, who passed away on November 29, was serving his first term as a state representative for the 56th District after nearly three decades of experience as an educator and school administer.  His commitment to education was highlighted by his appointment by Granholm to the Michigan Higher Education Facilities Authority in 2003.
