April 6, 2006

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today appointed Robert J. Kleine director of the Michigan Department of Treasury.  Kleine, who began his career with state government in the State Budget Office nearly 40 years ago, brings a wealth of experience in tax policy and economic forecasting.

As state treasurer, Kleine will continue the Granholm administration’s focus on strengthening Michigan’s business climate, streamlining bureaucracy, and increasing access to higher education.

“Bob Kleine’s experience and understanding of Michigan’s economy will be a tremendous asset to our state,” said Granholm. “As state treasurer, he will play a critical role in implementing many of our most important economic policies, including the 21st Century Jobs Fund, business tax restructuring, and financial aid for higher education.”

The Governor said Kleine’s vast experience with state government and thorough understanding of tax policy will enable him to quickly integrate into her economic team and help lead the administration’s efforts on these critical areas of public policy.

A graduate of Western Maryland College, Kleine holds a masters degree from Michigan State University.  He is currently president of Kleine Consulting and has previously served as vice president, senior economist, and editor of Public Sector Reports.  During Governor Bill Milliken’s Administration, Kleine served as director of the Office of Revenue and Tax Analysis in the Michigan Department of Management and Budget.  Kleine and his wife, Judy Karandjeff, live in East Lansing.

Kleine replaces Jay B. Rising as state treasurer.
