LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm issued the following statement regarding President Bush’s meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao:

“Today, President Bush had the chance to press Chinese President Hu Jintao on his nation’s unfair trade practices that are hurting American manufacturers’ ability to compete both at home and abroad.  China’s leader offered no tangible progress on trade barriers that have pushed the U.S. bilateral trade deficit with China past $200 billion – a new and damaging record, and President Bush offered no evidence that he used this meeting to stand up for American industry and jobs.

“America needs a tiger, not a pussycat, fighting for our American companies and American workers.  President Bush must take bold action to hold China accountable for these unfair trade practices.

“The President has repeatedly stated he is aware of obstacles facing Michigan’s economy but offers no action to leveling the playing field.  Michigan is looking for action on these unfair trade practices that can help our manufacturers compete and win in the global marketplace.  President Bush must lead the fight to protect American manufacturing jobs.”
