Governor Granholm Makes Appointments, Reappointments to Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments, reappointments, and designations to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports: 

Joan H. Lowenstein of Ann Arbor, attorney with Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss law firm.  Ms. Lowenstein is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008.  She succeeds Jeff Pierce whose term has expired. 

Deborah Manos of Grosse Pointe Woods, dentist and owner of Deborah Manos, DDS, MS, FAGD dental office.  Dr. Manos is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008.  She succeeds Carleton Valentine whose term has expired. 

Cheryl L. Angelelli of Fraser, director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Detroit Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.  Ms. Angelelli is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008. 

Barry A. Franklin of West Bloomfield, director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise Laboratories for William Beaumont Hospital.  Mr. Franklin is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008.

Charles T. Kuntzleman of Spring Arbor, owner of Fitness Finders, Inc. and adjunct associate professor and director of fitness at the University of Michigan.  Mr. Kuntzleman is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008.

Richard B. Parr of Mt. Pleasant, professor in the School of Health Sciences at Central Michigan University.  Mr. Parr is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008.

Suzanne Hugly Thomashow, M.D., PhD of East Lansing, pediatric physician with Turke and Thomashow Pediatrics.  Dr. Thomashow is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008.

Daniel S. Varner of Ypsilanti, CEO of Think Detroit PAL.  Mr. Varner is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2008. 

Daniel G. Mulhern of Lansing, chair of the Michigan Community Service Commission.  First Gentleman Mulhern is designated to continue serving as honorary vice-chairperson of the council.

Kimberlydawn Wisdom, M.D., M.S. of Southfield, Michigan Surgeon General.  Dr. Wisdom is designated to continue serving as honorary chairperson of the council.

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports is charged with coordinating and developing a statewide physical fitness and health program.  The council has undertaken a number of initiatives, and partnered with several organizations to carry out their goals.  Some notable events are the annual “Walk to School Day” and partnering with the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association for “Walk Michigan.”   

These appointments, reappointments, and designations are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
