Contact:  Heidi Watson 517-335-6397

August 17, 2006

Commission's First Meeting to be Held Today in Clinton Township

LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of the remaining two members of the Commission on Higher Education and Economic Growth in Macomb County.  Appointees are:

Kathy M. Downey of Shelby Township, office managing partner of Plante & Moran, PLLC.

Harold L. Haugh of Roseville, mayor of Roseville and assistant director of international regulations with General Motors Corporation.

Downey and Haugh will serve at the pleasure of the governor.

Last month, Governor Granholm announced the creation of the 15-member Commission on Higher Education and Economic Growth in Macomb County after signing Executive Order 2006-11.  The commission will assess the need for expanded post-secondary education opportunities in Macomb County by engaging residents in far-reaching public dialogue and will report its findings to the governor and the State Board of Education.

Currently, only 18 percent of Macomb County residents over the age of 25 have a bachelor’s degree.  Granholm has set a goal of doubling the number of Michigan residents with college degrees in the next 10 years.

The commission’s first meeting will be held today, August 17, in conference room B of the Clinton Macomb Library in Clinton Township.  Commission members will be available to the media at 5:30 p.m.

The Clinton Macomb Library is located at 40900 Romeo Plank Road, Clinton Township.

Members of the commission previously appointed by the governor are:

• Jim Biernat of Clinton Township
• Mike DeVault of Clarkston
• Jim Edoff of Troy
• Nancy Falcone-Sullivan of Washington Township
• Paul Gieleghem of Clinton Township
• Tina Guastella of New Baltimore
• Albert Lorenzo of Clinton Township
• Ida McGarrity of Mount Clemens
• Robert Milewski of Washington Township
• Lou Moss of Shelby Township
• Barbara Rossman of Shelby Township
• Grace Shore of Macomb
• Judge George Caram Steeh of Mount Clemens.  Judge Steeh is chair of the commission.
