Governor Granholm Makes Appointments to Commission on Spanish Speaking Affairs

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments to the Commission on Spanish Speaking Affairs:

Olga N. Hernandez-Patino, Ph.D. of Grand Ledge, chairperson for the health and human service careers department at Lansing Community College, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 10, 2009.  Dr. Hernandez-Patino succeeds Esmeralda Rodriguez whose term has expired.
 
Maria Elena Rodriguez of Allen Park, president of Mexicantown Community Development Corporation, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 10, 2009.  Ms. Rodriguez succeeds Frances Diaz Plets whose term has expired.
 
Leonard A. Savala III of Lansing, director of the undergraduate diversity program at Michigan State University, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 10, 2009.  Mr. Savala succeeds Luisa-Inez B. Schumacher who has resigned.
 
The commission was created by Public Act 164 of 1975 to develop policies and plans to serve the needs of Michigan's Spanish-speaking residents.  It consists of 15 members from around the state appointed by the governor who are of Hispanic descent and are Spanish-speaking.
 
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
