LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following appointments to the Midwestern Higher Education Commission, the State Community Corrections Board, the State Fire Safety Board, the Data Collection Agency Governing Board, and the Residential Builders' and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors' Licensing Board:

Midwestern Higher Education Commission

John C. Austin of Ann Arbor, member of the State Board of Education.  Mr. Austin is appointed to represent the State Board of Education for a term expiring at the pleasure of the governor.

Conway A. Jeffress, Ph.D. of Novi, president of Schoolcraft College.  Mr. Jeffress is reappointed to represent members at large in the field of higher education for a term expiring March 8, 2011.

The Midwestern Higher Education Commission is the Midwest's largest interstate resource-sharing commission for higher education.  Its purpose is to provide greater higher education opportunities and services for citizens residing in the Midwest region.

This appointment and reappointment is not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

State Community Corrections Board

Charles L. Brown of Frankenmuth, Saginaw County sheriff.  Sheriff Brown is reappointed to represent county sheriffs for a term expiring March 31, 2011.

Patricia L. Caruso of Sault Ste. Marie, director of the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).  Director Caruso is reappointed for a term expiring March 31, 2011.

Larry C. Inman of Williamsburg, retired.  Mr. Inman is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring March 31, 2011.

Bernard F. Parker of Detroit, Wayne County Commissioner - District 2.  Mr. Parker is reappointed to represent county commissioners for a term expiring March 31, 2011.

The State Community Corrections Board advises the director of MDOC in developing goals, criteria, and guidelines for local governments in establishing community corrections programs.  The board also determines grant guidelines for comprehensive corrections plans with care intended to provide safe, cost-effective alternatives to incarcerations. 

State Fire Safety Board

Greg M. Herman of Chesterfield, president and business agent for Sprinkler Fitters Local 704.  Mr. Herman is appointed to represent the building trades for a term expiring July 15, 2009.  He succeeds Scott Hill whose term has expired.

William H. Mayes of Lansing, executive director of the Michigan Association of School Administrators.  Mr. Mayes is appointed to represent persons who are members or employed by a statewide association representing school board members or school administrators for a term expiring July 15, 2009.  He succeeds Maureen Fischer whose term has expired.

John C. Wozniak of Belmont, fuels assistant manager of Crystal Flash Energy.  Mr. Wozniak is appointed to represent the flammable liquids industry for a term expiring July 15, 2009.  He succeeds Ronald VanDen Berg whose term has expired.

The State Fire Safety Board has the mission of protecting life and property from fire, smoke, hazardous materials, and fire-related panic in specific types of public facilities throughout the state of Michigan.

Data Collection Agency Governing Board

Bruno R. Czyrka of Grand Ledge, deputy director of the State of Michigan Workers' Compensation Agency.  Mr. Czyrka is reappointed to represent the executive branch of state government for a term expiring December 31, 2007.

The Data Collection Agency Governing Board is responsible for the determination of workers' compensation data requirements for establishing workers' disability compensation insurance rates.

Residential Builders' and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors' Licensing Board

Anthony L. Parker of Dearborn, president of Parkstone Development.  Mr. Parker is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring March 31, 2011.

Marilyn Lane of Fraser, mayor of Fraser and owner and developer of Lane Development.  Mayor Lane is reappointed to represent licensed residential builders for a term expiring March 31, 2011.

The Residential Builders' and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors' Licensing Board provides for the licensing of persons who engage in business as residential builders, residential maintenance and alteration contractors, and salespersons.  The board sets standards of qualification and eligibility for licensure, authorizes the collection and expenditure of fees, and provides penalties for violations.

These appointments and reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
