Governor Granholm Appoints Isiogu to Michigan Public Service Commission

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of Orjiakor N. Isiogu to the Michigan Public Service Commission to represent Democrats for a term expiring July 2, 2013.  Isiogu is designated chairperson of the commission.  He succeeds Laura Chappelle, who has resigned.  His appointment is effective September 9.
 
Isiogu, of Okemos, most recently served as director of telecommunications for the Michigan Public Service Commission.  He previously served as an assistant attorney general in the special litigation division, representing the state, its agencies as well as consumer interests in state and federal proceedings involving utilities such as natural gas, electric and telecommunications. 
 
Isiogu earned his juris doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School and his bachelors of arts degree in political science from Wayne State University.
 
The Michigan Public Service Commission regulates investor-owned natural gas, electric and telecommunications utilities, rural electrical cooperatives, and interstate motor carriers.  The commission also establishes safety standards and sets specific rates for services provided by the state's utilities and ensures dependable quality at reasonable rates that meets the public's needs and maintains a healthy economy for Michigan consumers.
 
This appointment is subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
