LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments to the Commission on Services to the Aging, the Veteran's Trust Fund Board of Trustees, the Michigan Board of Medicine, the Asparagus Marketing Program Advisory Board, and the Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board:

Commission on Services to the Aging

Owen F. Bieber, a Democrat of Byron Center and retired president of The United Auto Workers, is reappointed for a term expiring July 28, 2010. 

Rose M. Gill, an Independent of Wilson and an elderly outreach worker at Hannahville Indian Community, is reappointed for a term expiring July 28, 2010. 

Janice A.B. Wilson, a Democrat of Fraser and mayor pro tem for the city of Fraser, is reappointed for a term expiring July 28, 2010. 

James C. Wright, a Democrat of Springfield and retired federal employee, is reappointed for a term expiring July 28, 2010. 

The Commission on Services to the Aging advises the Office of Services to Aging, the governor, and the Legislature on matters related to policies and programs for older and aging persons in Michigan.  The commission also promotes senior citizen interests within state government and communities and administers the federal Older Americans Act programs and state-funded programs. 

These reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days. 

Veterans' Trust Fund Board of Trustees

John H. Skinner of Schoolcraft, former state commander of the American Legion, is appointed to represent the American Legion for a term expiring February 25, 2010.  He succeeds Arnold W. Zeile whose term has expired.
                                                                  
James R. Pintar of Painedale, retired, is reappointed to represent the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States for a term expiring February 25, 2010.

The Michigan Veterans' Trust Fund Board of Trustees provides for temporary assistance to veterans and their dependants for emergency and educational purposes from the earnings of funds.

The fund also dispenses tuition funding to children of veterans 100 percent disabled or who were killed in service. 

These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.

Michigan Board of Medicine

Nathaniel Smith-Tyge of Allen Park, graduate student and former scheduler for Representative John Dingell, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring December 31, 2010.  He succeeds Gretchen Pretty whose term has expired.

The Michigan Board of Medicine is responsible for the examination and licensing of persons prior to their entry into the practice of allopathic medicine in Michigan.  The board also establishes minimal standards of acceptable practice and assesses penalties for when those standards are not met as well as recommends licensure to schools or individuals once the designated exam, which is created by the board, is passed.

This appointment is subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.

Asparagus Marketing Program Advisory Board

Victor L. Shank of Dowagiac, president of Central Produce Sales, Inc., is appointed to represent growers from southwest Michigan for a term expiring November 13, 2008.  He succeeds Rodney D. Winkel whose term has expired.

Harold D. Goodell of Dowagiac, owner and operator of Goodell Farms, is reappointed to represent growers from southwest Michigan for a term expiring November 13, 2008.

Gerald L. Malburg of Hart, owner of Gerald Lee Malburg Farms, is reappointed to represent growers at-large for a term expiring November 13, 2008.

Kenneth F. Oomen of Hart, owner and partner of Oomen Brothers Inc., is reappointed to represent growers at-large for a term expiring November 13, 2008.

Thomas J. Oomen of Hart, owner and president of Oomen Farms Ltd. Inc., is reappointed to represent growers at-large for a term expiring November 13, 2008. 

The Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board seeks to promote the production and consumption of asparagus grown in Michigan as well as to assist in the agricultural research and development of asparagus farming.

These appointments and reappointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.

Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board

Jerry Dorsey, IV of Farmington Hills, deputy chief of the Child and Family Abuse Bureau, is appointed to represent persons with experience in an area related to the problems of domestic violence for a term expiring September 30, 2007 and reappointed for a term commencing October 1, 2007, and expiring September 30, 2010.  He succeeds Lore A. Rogers who has resigned.
                                                               
Princella E. Graham of Troy, corporate director of public policy/government relations for St. John Health, is reappointed to represent persons with experience in an area related to the problems of domestic violence for a term expiring September 30, 2010. 

The Honorable Nathaniel C. Perry, III of Flint, judge of the 68th district court, is reappointed to represent persons with experience in an area related to the problems of domestic violence for a term expiring September 30, 2010. 

The Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board is responsible for administering state and federal funding for domestic violence shelters and advocacy services, developing and recommending policy, and developing and providing technical assistance and training.

These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963.  They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
