LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the following recent appointments and reappointments:
State Community Corrections Board
Curtis T. McGhee II of Detroit, retired police inspector for the Detroit Police Department, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring March 29, 2012. He succeeds Carl W. Solden whose term has expired.
Louis Dean of Grand Rapids, executive director for Alternative Directions,
a community-based probation residential service offering rehabilitative and restorative sanctions for non-violent offenders in Kent County, is reappointed to represent existing community alternatives programs for a term expiring March 29, 2012.
George Zulakis of Okemos, shareholder and managing attorney for Baird & Zulakis, P.C., is reappointed to represent criminal defense attorneys for a term expiring March 29, 2012.
The State Community Corrections Board advises the director of Corrections in developing goals, criteria, and guidelines for local governments in establishing community corrections programs. It also determines grant guidelines for comprehensive corrections plans which are intended to provide safe, cost-effective alternatives to incarceration.
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports
Nathaniel S. Ohle of Grand Ledge, board relations liaison for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010. He succeeds Suzanne H. Thomashow whose term has expired.
Barry A. Franklin of West Bloomfield, director of Cardiac Rehabilitation & Exercise Laboratories for William Beaumont Hospital, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010.
Lila Lazarus of Commerce, anchor and health reporter for Fox 2 WJBK-TV, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010.
Kevin C. Bush of Livonia, management consultant for YMCA of the USA, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010.
Joan H. Lowenstein of Ann Arbor, attorney with Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss law firm, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010.
Deborah Manos of Grosse Pointe Woods, dentist and owner of Deborah Manos, DDS, MS, FAGD dental office, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010.
Richard B. Parr of Mt. Pleasant, professor of the School of Health Sciences at Central Michigan University, is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010.
Daniel S. Varner of Ypsilanti, CEO of Think Detroit, Inc., is reappointed to represent the general public for a term expiring April 16, 2010.
The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports is charged with coordinating and developing a statewide physical fitness and health program. The council has undertaken a number of initiatives and partnered with several organizations to carry out their goals. Some notable events are the annual "Walk to School Day" and partnering with the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association for "Walk Michigan."
These appointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
State Higher Education Facilities Commission
Lerrlyn Nelson of Detroit, executive director of Metro Neighborhood Housing and Community Development Center, is appointed to represent residents of the state interested in higher education for a term expiring May 22, 2011. She succeeds James W. Woolfolk whose term has expired.
Lewis N. Walker, Ph.D. of Plymouth, president and CEO of Lawrence Technological University, is appointed to represent private colleges and universities for a term expiring May 22, 2011. He succeeds Glenda D. Price who has resigned.
William J. Cochran of East Lansing, volunteer docent for the Michigan Historical Museum, is reappointed to represent residents of the state interested in higher education for a term expiring May 22, 2010.
Harold Gardner of Bingham Farms, senior vice president and assistant to the chairman of DTE Energy, is reappointed to represent residents of the state interested in higher education for a term expiring May 22, 2012.
James N. Goenner of Mt. Pleasant, executive director of the charter schools office for Central Michigan University, is reappointed to represent public colleges and universities in the state for a term expiring May 22, 2012.
Daniel J. Limer of Royal Oak, president of Pet Biz LLC, is reappointed to represent residents of the state interested in higher education for a term expiring May 22, 2012.
Amy D. Seetoo of Ann Arbor, Mandarin Chinese interpreter is reappointed to represent residents of the state interested in higher education for a term expiring May 22, 2011.
The State Higher Education Facilities Commission issues bonds in order to make loans to private nonprofit colleges and universities for various capital needs, including construction of new facilities, renovation of existing facilities, and equipment purchases.
These appointments and reappointments are subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
Michigan Public Safety Communications System Advisory Board
Tracy L. Johnson of Saginaw, police officer with the Saginaw City Police Department's Patrol Division, is appointed to represent local emergency first responders for a term expiring April 30, 2011. She succeeds Grace E. Ranger who has resigned.
David S. Slifka of Harbor Springs, executive director of Allied E.M.S. Systems, Inc., is appointed to represent local emergency first responders for a term expiring April 30, 2012. He succeeds Fred J. Paquin whose term has expired.
Jeffrey A. Friedland of Greenwood, director of the St. Clair County Office of Emergency Management/ Homeland Security, is reappointed to represent local emergency first responders for a term expiring April 30, 2012.
Brenda A. Ice of Farmington, director of homeland security emergency management for the city of Detroit, is reappointed to represent local emergency first responders for a term expiring April 30, 2012.
Colonel Peter C. Munoz of Okemos, director of the Michigan Department of State Police, is designated to serve as chair for a term expiring April 30, 2009.
General Michael McDaniel of East Lansing, assistant adjutant general for homeland security for the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, is designated to serve as vice-chair for a term expiring April 30, 2009.
The Michigan Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS) is Michigan's 800 MHz radio system and telecommunications network that provides statewide interoperability in digital clarity to its members throughout the state. The MPSCS advisory board adopts procedures governing the organization and operations of the MPSCS.
These appointments and reappointments are not subject to disapproval by the Michigan Senate.
Blue Cross Blue Shield Board of Directors
Emery I. Klein of Southfield, co-owner and general manager of Klein Properties, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring February 18, 2010. He succeeds Gary H. Torgow whose term has expired.
James G. Agee of Laingsburg, president of J.G. Agee Consultants L.L.C and co-director of the Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP) at Michigan State University, is reappointed to represent the public and retired individuals 62 years of age or older for a term expiring February 18, 2010.
John M. Hamilton of Bloomfield Hills, business manager and international vice president of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 324, is reappointed to represent the public for a term expiring February 18, 2010.
Teola P. Hunter of Detroit, consultant for Sloan-Hunter Group, is reappointed to represent the public and retired individuals 62 years of age or older for a term expiring February 18, 2010.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Board of Directors exercises authority and power necessary to carry out the lawful purposes of the Blue Cross Blue Shield corporation. It also develops policies that benefit the quality, cost, and availability to Blue Cross Blue Shield members

Unarmed Combat Commission
Albert J. Low of Pinckney, vice president and owner of Cutting Edge Unlimited training center in Detroit, is appointed to represent boxing licensees for a term expiring June 5, 2010.
Douglas J. Maskin of Bloomfield Hills, shareholder and trial attorney for Frank R. Langton & Associates, P.C., is appointed to represent boxing licensees for a term expiring June 5, 2009.
Kevin D. Moore of Dearborn Heights, president of Truck Drivers Local Union No. 299, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 5, 2011.
Earle L. Robinson of East Lansing, sports director for WKAR at Michigan State University, is appointed to represent boxing licensees for a term expiring June 5, 2009.
James K. Sype of Okemos, self-employed consultant, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 5, 2009.
Charles K. Zurawski of Milan, international servicing representative with the U.A.W. International Union, is appointed to represent the general public for a term expiring June 5, 2010.
Joe W. Byrd of Flint, amateur and professional coach of the Joe Byrd Boxing Academy, is appointed to represent boxing licensees for a term expiring June 5, 2010.
The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission is responsible for the regulation of professional boxing and mixed martial arts under PA 403 of 2004, as amended. The commission is the successor to the Michigan Boxing Commission.
These appointments are subject to Article V, Section 6 of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. They stand confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
