LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today joined executives from Cascade Engineering in Muskegon to officially launch the company's SWIFT Wind Turbine system that provides businesses and homeowners in windy environments an effective solution to lower energy bills and reduce carbon emissions.  Granholm recently signed energy legislation she proposed in her 2008 State of the State address that will create jobs, diversify Michigan's economy and ensure clean, affordable energy for Michigan consumers.

"Expanding Michigan's alternative energy sector is a key part of my plan to diversify the state's economy and create jobs," Granholm said.  "Companies like Cascade that have made a commitment to Michigan and a commitment to renewable energy are tremendous partners in our efforts to lead the nation in the development of alternative energy technologies, attract investments and create jobs."

The SWIFT Wind Turbine is the first quiet rooftop wind turbine that generates electricity by harnessing the power of the wind, providing a clean energy source for domestic, community and industrial use.

"Renewable energy is the future for Michigan and our nation, and it will protect our pocketbooks and protect the planet from climate change," Granholm said.  "Michigan is a natural fit for the new energy jobs being created right now."

The U.S. Department of Energy found that Michigan is one of only four states with the potential to create more than 30,000 manufacturing jobs in wind production alone, while the Center for American Progress estimates that Michigan can create more than 60,000 jobs by investing in wind, solar, biofuels and energy efficiency.
