Whereas, Across the country, alcohol and drug dependency is a major public health problem that affects Americans of all ages, races, ethnic backgrounds, and communities; and,
Whereas, Through increased awareness, education, and discussion, we can overcome the stigma associated with this disease that is often a barrier to treatment; and,
Whereas, Drug and alcohol dependency is a treatable disease, and seeking advanced treatment methods through medical research and other promising areas of discovery are essential to the fight against it; and,
Whereas, It is vital that we work together to raise awareness, encourage an open and honest dialogue about this disease, and eliminate its stigma in our communities in order to stem the dramatic rise in alcohol and drug abuse, and prevent more alcohol and drug dependency deaths; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2006, as Sober Day in Michigan.
