Schizophrenia Awareness Week

Whereas, Mental health service providers, service recipients, and advocates strive to make the citizens of Michigan aware that schizophrenia is a treatable medical illness; and,

Whereas, A greater understanding of schizophrenia, its effects, and its treatments can bring about brighter prospects for relief, progress toward recovery, and greater quality of life for individuals with schizophrenia; and,

Whereas, The National Schizophrenia Foundation, which is headquartered in Lansing, Michigan, the Schizophrenics Anonymous self-help network, and other organizations have combined their resources to make the public aware of the causes, symptoms and treatments of schizophrenia-related disorders; and,

Whereas, On May 21-27, 2006, efforts will be coordinated to raise the awareness of the general public and subsequently diminish the stigma faced by those individuals experiencing schizophrenia and their loved ones, a barrier which inhibits early intervention, continued treatment, and successful community integration; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, proclaim the week of May 21, 2006, as Schizophrenia Awareness Week in Michigan.
