Whereas, "No Child Left Inside" is a growing national movement which encourages children to reconnect with the outdoors and is based loosely on Robert Louv's book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder; and,
Whereas, The Department of Natural Resources wants to encourage children to play outdoors and participate in outdoor nature activities by offering teachers resources such as tours of state parks and fish hatcheries, free state park admission and activity pages that are available on its website; and,
Whereas, On April 20, 2007, the Friday before National Earth Day, every state park visitor center in Michigan will be offering school programs designed around educating students about our natural resources; and,
Whereas, The State of Michigan offers free programs and resources through the Department of Natural Resources, such as Kids-in-the-Park and the Outdoor Explorers Club for Kids, which are designed to promote appreciation and knowledge of Michigan's great outdoor heritage; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 20, 2007, as No Child Left Inside Day in Michigan.
