Whereas, Many teens who drink alcohol obtain it from parties, friends, and parties which breaks the law and endangers their health; and,
Whereas, More than 10% of eight graders, 21% of high school sophomores, and 28% of seniors report binge drinking, which is defined as four or more drinks in a sitting for a woman and five for a man; and,
Whereas, Studies have shown that since the human brain continues to develop into a person's 20's, alcohol abuse can affect the mental capacities of the user; and,
Whereas, Young people under the age of 21 are more likely to be impaired by drinking before they drive than those of legal age, and approximately 1,900 die each year in car accidents caused by drinking and driving; and,
Whereas, Alcohol use makes teens more likely than non-drinkers to engage in risky sexual behavior, such as sex without a birth control method or with someone they don't know; and,
Whereas, Irresponsible teen drinking is not inevitable, and can be curbed with the right amount of awareness and public participation; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of September 10, 2007, as We Don't Serve Teens week.
