Whereas, Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) are severe adverse reactions to medication; and,
Whereas, More than two million Americans are hospitalized each year with SJS, and of those cases more than 140,000 of them succumb to the illness; and,
Whereas, Almost any medication - even over the counter drugs - can cause SJS; and,
Whereas, A large portion of SJS victims are children, although the illness does not discriminate based on age, race or gender; and,
Whereas, Recognizing the early symptoms of SJS and prompt medical attention are the most valuable tools in minimizing possible long-term effects SJS may have on its victims; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2007, as Stevens Johnson Syndrome Awareness Month.
