Public Health Week

Whereas, Public Health Week 2008 provides an excellent opportunity for Michigan citizens to learn more about the connection between public health and climate change and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who are working to ensure healthy Michigan communities and environments; and,

Whereas, Michigan's public health system is dedicated to protecting our citizens' health through strategies that can prevent, plan for, and manage the potentially devastating impacts of climate change related to heat and severe weather, air pollution and respiratory health, water- and vector-borne diseases, food and water supply availability and security, and mental health; and,

Whereas, Michigan's public health system promotes positive health choices for all our citizens and protects vulnerable populations that are particularly susceptible to the impact of climate change; and,

Whereas, Michigan's public system incorporates and relies on a broad array of partners to be successful, including the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Michigan Association for Local Public Health, the Michigan Environmental Council, Michigan Public Health Institute, the Michigan Public Health Association, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan School of Public Health, local health departments, tribal organizations, and many other community partners; and,

Whereas, Many departments in state government work together to implement strategies that prevent or respond to the potentially devastating impacts of climate change, including the Michigan State Police and the Departments of Agriculture, Environmental Quality, and Transportation; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of April 14, 2008, as Public Health Week in Michigan.
