Patriot Day

Whereas, Two years ago, on September 11, 2001, Michigan and America were shaken and forever changed when terrorists took the lives of more than 3,000 innocent people; and,

Whereas, In the aftermath and shock of that horrific day, the extraordinary spirit of American citizen patriotism was shown in the bravery of the victims and their families, the first responder units who risked their lives to ensure the safety of others, and citizens of all walks of life, united in sadness, who gave of themselves in myriad ways to those in need, and in so doing made a torn nation whole again; and,

Whereas, Since that day, we have seen the greatness of the American spirit further demonstrated in the courage and strength of the fallen victims’ families, and those around the nation who continue to honor those lost with their service to country and community, including first responders and workers who donated their time and tireless efforts in helping America recover and rebuild; and,

Whereas, Our resolve to promote freedom and prevent further attacks on American soil has been demonstrated by the brave servicemen and women who have risked and given their lives to our overseas campaigns; and,

Whereas, By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day"; and,

Whereas, Americans should observe September 11th with appropriate ceremonies and activities, such as remembrance services and candlelight vigils so to not forget those lives lost on that day; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim:

 1. The flag of the United States of America shall be flown at half-staff at or on all state-owned or state-controlled buildings on September 11, 2003.

 2. This proclamation is effective upon filing.

Given under my hand and the Great Seal of the State of Michigan this 9th day of September, 2003
