Constitution Day - March 4, 2004

Whereas, The preamble of the United States Constitution states “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America”; and,

Whereas, March 4, 2004 marks the 215th anniversary of the day our first United States Congress convened under a constitutionally limited republic; and,

Whereas, The Constitution is described as the “Supreme Law of the Land” and the fulfillment of the promise made in the Declaration of Independence; and,

Whereas, The recognition of Constitution Day has given us the opportunity to recall the high ideals and devotion to liberty had by the individuals who framed our Constitution; and,

Whereas, We all need to be inspired to rededicate ourselves to our country and to the support and defense of our Constitution and to a greater involvement in responsible citizenship; and now therefore be it

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 4, 2004, as Constitution Day in Michigan and encourage the people of Michigan to renew their dedication to the preservation of the ideals upon which this great nation was founded.
