Surveyors Week

Whereas, The development of this land into the State of Michigan first began when surveyors were instructed to venture into the territory and begin the process of dividing the forests into townships utilizing the Public Land Survey System created by Thomas Jefferson; and,

Whereas, Our 83 counties and numerous townships are a testament to the effort these individuals provided; and,

Whereas, Today’s surveyors, although they no longer work with plain compass and chain, continue to work in providing the necessary survey work for our infrastructure, our homes, our developments and our new growth throughout the State; and,

Whereas, Only two man-made objects are visible from outer space, the Great Wall of China and the Public Land Survey System; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan to hereby proclaim the week of March 13, 2005, as Surveyors Week in Michigan.
