The Governor's Residence and the Governor's Ceremonial Office
at the state Capitol are exhibiting student decorative art submitted by 50 Michigan
schools during the month of December. The displays are part of a unique partnership
between the Governor's Office, public and private schools, teachers, artist
in residence programs and the Department of Education to provide students with
a project that teaches them real-world skills. The student art is inspired by
this year's theme, "Michigan: A Land of Winter Wonder".
Education is a top priority for Governor Granholm and this project combines
student learning, expression and accomplishment. The schools selected represent
Michigan's geographic and demographic diversity. Each piece of art showcases
a student's creativity and interpretation of a specific style of learning.
The Michigan Department of Education provided sample activities and curriculum
plans to 50 schools that accepted the invitation to participate in the project.
The sample activities contained benchmarks in the arts and other core subjects
for each grade level and served as springboards for teachers to create learning
activities that corresponded with the theme.
