Governor Granholm Statement on President Obama's Announcement on Emission Standards, Environment

Contact:  Liz Boyd 517.335.6397

January 26, 2009

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement on President Obama's direction to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to review the previous denial of a waiver request by California to set its own standards for the regulation of vehicle emissions.

"I fully support President Obama's goal of decreasing our nation's dependence on foreign oil and welcome his steps in moving this country forward.  As the administration begins its work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, I urge the president and his Environmental Protection Agency to develop a strong, national standard for vehicle emissions rather than a patchwork of state standards.  A strong, single standard will help drive automotive innovation, ensure certainty for businesses operating under those standards, create new jobs, and protect the environment and at the same time ensure that we give the auto manufacturers a clear goal to meet as they work to retool and focus on producing advanced technology vehicles like the Chevy Volt.  I look forward to working with the Obama administration and the EPA as this process moves forward."
