Governor Granholm's Statement on General Motors

Contact:  Liz Boyd 517-335-6397

June 1, 2009

LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today issued the following statement on General Motors:

"This is undoubtedly a painful day for General Motors, for Michigan and for the families who depend on GM for their livelihood.  Although we knew this day was coming, it doesn't make it any easier.  GM and Michigan will emerge from this challenge and help to lead the new green economy.

"At the state level, we will do all we can to protect the people affected - from helping those who lose their jobs with unemployment insurance and job training, to assisting those communities that need investments to find new uses for closed facilities.

"We will be aggressive about fighting to keep additional plants and auto jobs, and we'll be even more aggressive in creating new, green jobs in the alternative energy economy.

"We are thankful the Obama administration shares our commitment to supporting American manufacturing and are proud to be part of its vision for a new alternative energy economy.  Our goal is to make Michigan the alternative energy capital of the United States, building on our rich heritage and manufacturing know-how and growing new jobs right here in our state.  A rejuvenated auto industry will be a critical part in creating those jobs and reducing our reliance on foreign oil."
