Dear Colleague:
I take great pride in announcing the official declaration of Michigan Week, May
17-26, 2003. This year's theme, "Great Lakes, Great Traditions: Celebrating
Michigan's Heritage," gives us all the opportunity to celebrate the things
that make our state so special: our vibrant museums, theaters, and galleries;
our brilliant parks and beaches; and of course, the remarkable people who have
written our history for more than 160 years.
In the face of a sometimes uncertain world, Michigan Week offers us the chance
to celebrate something we know to be true and constant – that Michigan is
a wonderful place to work, live, and raise a family.
I invite each of you to join me in celebrating Michigan Week this year. I hope
you’ll take a moment to visit the Michigan Week Web site at www.michigan.gov/hal.
You’ll find a list of parades, car shows, poster contests, book signings,
and many more ideas for ways to celebrate the week at home and at work.
A special reminder that every year, as part of Michigan Week, the Volunteer Leadership
and Community Achievement awards are presented in recognition of those dedicated
citizens who give of their time and talents to better their communities. Please
take a moment to nominate your co-worker, your neighbor, or your friends for this
prestigious honor – the deadline for entries is Tuesday.
Finally, Michigan Week isn’t just for state employees or for school children
studying Michigan history. It’s an opportunity for each of us to spark the
Michigan Week spirit in our own communities – and beyond our two peninsulas.
Each of you is a mother, a father, a neighbor, a community leader, a friend, a
concerned citizen. I hope you’ll work with your local chambers of commerce,
schools, libraries, businesses, and other organizations to create events and programs
that speak to the heart and heritage of your own communities. And I hope you’ll
be an ambassador for the great state we share. Michigan Week is the perfect opportunity
to invite your out-of-state friends or to plan a trip to a Michigan “hot
spot” that you haven’t seen before.
The Department of History, Arts and Libraries is heading up this year's effort;
for details or questions, please contact Jim Schultz at schultzjh@michigan.gov
or Sarah Lapshan at slapshan@michigan.gov.
Thank you.
Very truly yours,
Jennifer M. Granholm
Governor
