Lisa Weller: A Day in the Life

Lisa Weller

Lisa Weller works in DIT’s Application Services, in the Information Office headed by Doug Couto.  Before the department-wide reorganization, she was with Enterprise Application Services.  Lisa is a Project Manager and Electronic Data Interchange Specialist, who works mainly on financial systems.

Lisa began her career with the State right after her graduation from Grand Valley State five years ago.  She was an Information Systems major in college, and was with DMB before coming to DIT.  Although Lisa’s degree was within the computer industry, she’s had to pick up the financial aspects of her job along the way.  Getting a job dealing with financial computer systems, she says, was just “luck.”

Her new project management duties are Lisa’s favorite part of her job.  She says she’s always learning something new, or working on a new project.  The most challenging part of Lisa’s job is bridging the language barrier between the clients (accountants) and the technical project team.

Lisa is known for providing exemplary service to her clients.  Because of that, she recently won the “Beyond the Call” award from IKON/IOS Capital.  Lisa worked on a project to convert the invoicing portion of the IKON contract from paper to an electronic format.  All of the state’s agencies now have the option of using the Electronic Transaction Processing (ETP) system to receive invoices electronically, and eventually the goal is for all of them to do so.  Because of her dedication to the project, she was selected for the award and it will be presented this week.

Lisa is working on two new projects.  The charters are being created and she  will begin tracking the schedules shortly.  The first project is one designed to expand e-invoicing to Detroit Edison Energy.  The other is to create a vendor file interface into MAIN-FACS for OFM and the Department of Community Health.  Right now, much of the work revolves around expanding the systems that are already in place.  “It’s more cost-effective to add new trading partners to the existing framework instead of creating new sub-systems,” Lisa explained.

In addition to being service-oriented in the office, Lisa is very involved in her community, as well.  She is involved with the Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth, or SPYs.  The club holds fundraisers like a judged trail ride, golf tournaments, 50s/60s Dance, Barnyard Classic 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and a bike-a-thon.  The funds raised help purchase items from the elementary school wish list, pay fees so local children do not have to pay to play sports,  help support the high school band, and a variety of other community related activities.  The group also provides approximately 10 scholarships annually to graduating seniors in the Sunfield area. Lisa won one of these scholarships and has benefited from the support the SPYs have provided Sunfield, which is part of the reason she has become involved in the group now that she’s started her professional career.

Special thanks to Lisa, and congratulations for her award!
