Dan Wawiernia: A Day in the Life

Dan Wawiernia

Dan Wawiernia is the latest person to be featured in “A Day in the Life.”  He is one of our department’s DMB partners.  He works for DMB Financial Services as an accountant in the DIT Section.  As part of the partnership, DIT pays DMB for these accounting services.  When a new department such as DIT is created, it is very expensive and cumbersome to develop a large billing and accounting system, so it is advantageous to partner with DMB.  Dan explained that DMB Financial Services was doing a lot of IT Accounting prior to the creation of DIT, anyway, so it was a good fit.

Dan’s main duties are the billing and financial reporting for several areas of DIT.  He is responsible for the financial reporting for Telecom, the Data Center and the Center for Geographic Information.  For Agency Services serving DCH and FIA, Dan does both the financial reporting and billing.  Basically, that means he, along with the rest of the DIT accounting section, creates the invoices for all the other state agencies that allow DIT to get paid for staff and purchases.  So if you work in one of the areas Dan supports, you can thank him for your timely paycheck!

Having been with the state almost seven years, Dan is the most senior member of the DIT Section.  He has always worked for DMB, having begun working there after his graduation from Michigan State in July of 1997.  During his time at MSU, Dan worked for the Michigan State Police.

Dan said there are two things he likes best about his job.  Since the creation of DIT, he has been able to branch out and work with more state agencies, which he really enjoys.  Prior to DIT, Dan did the accounting for MIPC (now the Data Center) and DMB Telecommunications (now DIT Telecom).  He had enjoyed learning about the other agencies and expanding his work.  Dan also really enjoys the other DMB Financial Services employees.  The DIT Section of seven is a “great group to work with,” he says.  The most challenging aspect of the job is the manual entry he has to do on spreadsheets.  Dan says they are working toward some automated billing procedures, which will free up his time to do more analysis.

Away from work, Dan is a huge Michigan State fan.  His favorite sport is basketball – he’s a season ticket holder – but he also loves football and has season tickets for that, too.  Dan says he basically loves anything MSU, and has traveled to some away games, including a trip to see basketball at Ohio State.  Dan is married to a Ferris State grad, so the MSU-Ferris hockey game is always a must-see for them.  Thanks for being a part of “Day in the Life” Dan, and Go Green!
