Whereas, April 22, 2006, marks the 555th birthday of the Spanish Queen Isabella; and,
Whereas, Queen Isabella was instrumental in sponsoring Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World in 1492; and,
Whereas, The history of America is tied to the history of Spain and Queen Isabella, and are joined together in common bonds of friendship, tradition, and individual freedom; and,
Whereas, Queen Isabella stood completely alone among the Spanish royalty as she refused to aid in the early enslavement of Native Americans; and,
Whereas, Her devout faith, while rooted within the Catholic Church, has remained a model for devotion and decency within all faiths; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim April 22, 2006, as Queen Isabella Day in Michigan.
