Whereas, Huntington’s Disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disease that causes total physical and mental deterioration over a 12-15 year period; and,
Whereas, Huntington’s Disease affects 30,000 patients and 200,000 genetically “at risk” individuals in the United States; and,
Whereas, Since the discovery of the gene that causes Huntington’s Disease in 1939, the pace of HD research has accelerated; and,
Whereas, Researchers are conducting important research projects involving Huntington’s Disease; and,
Whereas, The Michigan Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, whose tireless efforts advocating for families, educating the public and providing support and services to affected families living with this disease certainly deserves praise and recognition; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2006, as Huntington Disease Advocacy Awareness Month in Michigan.
