Whereas, The Michigan Midwives Association (MMA) is an expanding network of midwives, apprentices and childbirth educators who represent a wide spectrum of philosophies; and,
Whereas, The purpose of the MMA is to facilitate communication among midwives, to further the education of midwives, to educate midwifery and childbirth, to respond to the legal needs of midwives, to further the alliance between midwives and other health care professionals, and to maintain affiliation with local and national organizations that share their interests, as well as other state midwifery groups; and,
Whereas, The MMA provides a number of services which create a strong network for the midwife profession, including educational workshops, a peer review network, a newsletter, standards and guidelines for the practice of midwifery, statistics, an apprenticeship program, and a certification program for prospective midwives; and,
Whereas, Midwife Day in Michigan presents an opportunity to promote better understanding of the role that midwives play in the health care profession; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan to hereby proclaim May 5, 2006, as Midwife Day in Michigan and I encourage all citizens to recognize the valuable role midwives play in the community.
