Whereas, May is Older Americans Month and according to the 200 U.S. Census, Michigan has nearly 1.6 million people over the age of 60 years, representing 16.1 percent of the total population; and,
Whereas, By the year 2025 Michigan’s population of 65 and older is projected to grow from 12.3 percent to 18.1 percent; and,
Whereas, 80 percent of older Michiganians are vital, healthy senior who want to stay that way; and,
Whereas, Older adults are entitled to live healthier lives through a combination of independence and choice, and regular physical activity can help keep them vital and healthy; and,
Whereas, Senior Health and Fitness Day is designed to introduce seniors to the many choices they have for physical activity, and to promote regular physical activity among this age group; and,
Whereas, 6 percent of Michigan seniors have more than 1 chronic disease and regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the severity and progression of chronic disease; and,
Whereas, Research has shown that regular moderate physical activity can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers, helps reduce the discomfort of some chronic diseases like arthritis, helps eliminate mild depression, helps reduce the risk of dementia related diseases, helps maintain desirable levels for blood pressure, lipids, and body weight, and helps maintain strength and balance; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 31, 2006, as Senior Health and Fitness Day in Michigan. Together we can make Michigan a leader in disease prevention and health promotion efforts so that Michiganians can age successfully.
