Whereas, Children’s Vision and Learning Month begun 10 years ago to raise awareness of the importance good vision plays in a child’s ability to read and learn; and,
Whereas, Research shows that vision disorders are the number on e handicapping condition of children with as many as one in four school age children having vision problems; and,
Whereas, Early detection and prompt treatment of vision problems will lead to a reduction in the number of condition that result in poor school performances; and,
Whereas, Children and parents across the great state of Michigan take time in the month of August to prepare for another school year by purchasing new clothes and supplies, yet many children will begin their studies with undiagnosed and untreated vision problems; and,
Whereas, Doctors of the Michigan Optometric Association dedicate thousands of hours a year to vision screenings and eye exams to ensure that all children have access to proper eye care; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim August 2006 as Children’s Vision and Learning Month.
