Whereas, Inflammatory breast cancer is a major public health threat comprising 5-10 percent of all breast cancers; and,
Whereas, This most aggressive form of breast cancer is characterized by very slow survival rates; and,
Whereas, 50 percent of inflammatory breast cancer cases are fatal within five years and almost all within ten years; and,
Whereas, Rapid and accurate diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer is difficult due to the limited amount of pre-treatment tumor tissue available for research; and,
Whereas, The research of inflammatory breast cancer is applicable not only for non-inflammatory breast cancers but also to all other metastasizing cancers; and,
Whereas, Lack of research has hampered advancements in early detection, treatment, and improved prognoses; and,
Whereas, During the week of October 1-7, 2006, the Michigan Department of Community Health will encourage Michigan women to find out how they can maximize Inflammatory breast cancer management by staying active, knowing their risk, understanding treatment options and recognizing the need for increased research; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of October 1, 2006, as Inflammatory Breast Week in Michigan. I encourage all Michigan women to learn how to prevent inflammatory breast cancer, and enable those at risk to obtain the advantage of early detection through routine checkups and good health.
