Whereas, The arts are a vital part of our nation's history and culture; and,

Whereas, Michigan is the birthplace for many nationally and internationally renowned artists; and,

Whereas, Public and private investment in the arts strengthens, unites, and defines our communities and engages families in positive experiences; and,

Whereas, Youth involvement in the arts helps them to understand and respect people of diverse populations and cultures; and,

Whereas, Inclusion of the arts in education furthers the total development of our youth, and increases the overall educational performance and creative workforce of the future; and,

Whereas, Michigan schools have been recognized among the best in the nation for arts education; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Youth Arts Festival annually recognizes and brings together more than 1,000 of Michigan's best high school artists, authors, dancers, thespians and musicians during the month of May; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is unique in the nation as the only known multi-disciplinary festival bringing together all of the arts for an extended showcase of student talent; and,

Whereas, During the Michigan Youth Arts Festival professional working artists, conductors, educators and performers are on-hand to cultivate, inspire and develop Michigan's young artists; and,

Whereas, This gala week of exhibits, presentations and performances has occurred for 45 consecutive years; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of May 6, 2007, as Youth Arts Festival Week in Michigan.
