Whereas, Each year, Michigan suffers its highest levels of ozone pollution from May until September; and,
Whereas, Increased ozone levels, can cause breathing difficulties affecting the elderly, children, those with asthma or other breathing problems, and people who actively exercise or work outdoors; and,
Whereas, Small changes in our everyday actions can help reduce ground-level ozone emissions, such as refraining from letting a vehicle engine idle, avoiding over-filling gas tanks, fueling vehicles after 5:00 PM during the ozone season, and not mowing lawns on Ozone Action Days; and,
Whereas, Clean Commute Day will focus on educating the community about air quality and ozone levels, and letting the public know about all of the clean commute options that are available to them; and,
Whereas, On Clean Commute Day residents are asked to leave their cars at home and instead take the bus, carpool, vanpool, bike or walk to work; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 3, 2007, as Clean Commute Day.
