Navy Week

Whereas, With 3,288 miles of shoreline, Michigan has more coast than the entire Eastern Seaboard of the United States; and,

Whereas, Michigan has- a rich naval tradition beginning with the War of 1812; and,

Whereas, The name "USS Michigan" has been proudly bestowed on three United States Navy ships; and,

Whereas, Michigan is home to six Navy Reserve Centers serving more than 2,500 active reservists, a strong network of recruiters at Navy Recruiting District Michigan command and a nationally prominent Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) program at the University of Michigan; and,

Whereas, Michigan has a large contingent of Sea Cadets, an active group of high schools that maintain Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) Programs  and numerous councils representing the state in the Navy League of the United States, ; and,

Whereas, Observing Navy Week in Michigan is an opportunity to celebrate and honor the past, present, and future of Michigan's long-standing support of Navy service members; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of July 8, 2007, as Navy Week in Michigan. I applaud the Michigan citizens who have so proudly served in the United States Navy.
