Whereas, Michigan's heritage as a manufacturing state has earned it respect throughout the nation and around the world, and our state continues to open new opportunities as a leader in manufacturing processes and technology; and,
Whereas, Manufacturing, along with allied industries, mining and utilities, provide nearly 21 percent of Michigan's gross state product, totaling nearly $78 billion; and,
Whereas, Michigan manufactured goods account for 92 percent of the states total exports, worth approximately $50 billion in 2006; and,
Whereas, Manufacturers employ nearly 650,000 people in the state; and,
Whereas, Manufacturers conservatively contribute $1.5 billion annually toward educational, cultural, human services and other community-building efforts; and,
Whereas, Each dollar of manufacturing spending generates $1.37 in additional economic activity, the largest multiplier effect of any industry; and,
Whereas, Michigan ranks second in the nation for research and development with nearly $17 billion spent on Research & Development (R & D); and,
Whereas, 85 percent of the North American automotive R & D occurs in the state; and,
Whereas, Michigan's automotive industry contributes 67 percent of the state's total monitored capital investments; and,
Whereas, Manufacturing is a key source of good paying jobs, with average wages of $56,677 in 2005, compared to an average state wage of $41,125 ; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of May 6, 2007, as Michigan Manufacturing Week.
