GLBT Pride Month

Whereas, GLBT Pride Month is traditionally observed in June as a way to recognize progress made in creating a society more inclusive and accepting of all citizens; and,

Whereas,Pride Month celebrates a commitment to continually working together to break down the walls of fear and prejudice and to build bridges of understanding and tolerance; and,

Whereas, Members of the GLBT community have made important and lasting contributions to the State of Michigan in every field of endeavor; and,

Whereas, The GLBT rights movement has united members of the GLBT community, their families and friends, and all those committed to justice and equality to ban discrimination and to protect GLBT individuals from prejudice and persecution; and,

Whereas, Many challenges still exist and, as recent tragedies show, prejudice against GLBT individuals can still erupt into acts of hatred and violence; and

Whereas, With each passing year, Michigan continues to strive toward greater diversity and openness in support of each person's identity; and,

Whereas, We believe that support of the work to increase tolerance iscritical in ensuring acceptance, safety, and equality; and,

Whereas, In an increasingly diverse business and global community, we believe that fostering a diverse community in Michigan is a critical part of ensuring economic growth and success in the future; now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2007, as GLBT Pride Month.
