Whereas, Foodways is a term referring to the culinary practices of different peoples and regions, not only their food, but also the histories, behaviors and ideas related to its preparation, serving and consumption, including family and cultural traditions; and,
Whereas, Michigan is home to more than one hundred ethnic groups, with each providing cultural contributions to Michigan's foodways such as pasties, cudighi, coneys and paczkis, to name just a few; and,
Whereas, Hunting, fishing and gathering are significant social, recreational and occupational activities which make significant contributions to our diets; and,
Whereas, As an agricultural state, Michigan leads the nation in a number of crops, including tart cherries, blueberries and mint, which are also ingredients in local food specialties; and,
Whereas, The culture, history and meaning of Michigan foods are emphasized in local foodways events and festivals across the state each year, often based in an ethnic or religious tradition; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 26, 2007, as Michigan Foodways Day. I encourage citizens and visitors to celebrate by enjoying the rich cultural food traditions of Michigan and visiting one of the six Michigan Foodways exhibits sites in our state over the next year.
