Whereas, The Garden Club of Greater Lansing celebrates its pride in Michigan's Capitol by orchestrating the annual design and installation of floral beds and plantings on the grounds outside of the Capitol Building; and,

Whereas, The Garden Club of Greater Lansing has significantly advanced the beautification of Michigan's Capitol City of Lansing, including its public parks and grounds at the Capitol Area District Library, Potter Park Zoo Gardens, Hawk Island Park, Scott Center, Grand Woods Park, Fenner Nature Center, Beekman Center and the Monet Bridge at MSU's Children's Garden; and,

Whereas, The Garden Club of Greater Lansing enhances the Capitol City's neighborhoods by contributing garden pots, plants and materials for community gardens, neighborhood entrances and dividers, including low-income housing areas in conjunction with the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition; and,

Whereas, The Garden Club of Greater Lansing offers sponsorship for junior gardening through scholarships to Capitol City students for attendance at nature camps, as well as annual educational events such as Arbor Day and the Annual Corn Project, now it in its 28th year and involving 2,500 first and second grade area students; and,

Whereas. The Garden Club of Greater Lansing has most recently formed a new non-profit organization titled "Friends of Frances Park" in support of the renovation and upkeep of Frances Park as a jewel in the Capitol City's park system; and,

Whereas, The Garden Club of Greater Lansing has achieved these enhancements through its annual fund-raising events, and especially its leadership role in developing partnerships among public and private organizations, educational institutions, corporations and community members; and,

Whereas, The Garden Club of Greater Lansing is a long-standing award-winning member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan, Inc., and National Garden Clubs, Inc., which concurrently celebrate the benefits of gardening throughout our nation's communities; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of June 3, 2007, as Michigan Garden Week.
