Slow Down to Get Around Week

Whereas, Refuse collection workers face a variety of occupational hazards each and every day, and was identified as one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States; and,

Whereas, Refuse collection and recycling accounted for over 1 percent of all occupational fatalities nationally between 1992 and 1997 and on average there is one fatal injury every day caused by a vehicle striking a worker; and,

Whereas, A study done by the University of Mimi and the Florida Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management indicates that the high number of deaths can be attributed partly to impatient drivers who try to pass stopped garbage collection vehicles and end up hitting collectors; and,

Whereas, According to the same study the mortality rate for a refuse collector is 100 times higher than what is considered acceptable risk by any standard; and,

Whereas, The "Slow Down to Get Around" campaign was created to increase the general public's awareness of the dangers refuse collectors face each and every day; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of June 10, 2007, as Slow Down to Get Around Campaign Week.
