The Great Michigan Read Day

Whereas, The Great Michigan Read was established by the Michigan Humanities Council to promote the reading of literature and help foster an educated, engaged society; and,

Whereas, On July 27, children and adults alike in over 100 communities across the State of Michigan will simultaneously enjoy and study the same book, Ernest Hemingway's The Nick Adams Stories; and,

Whereas, The Nick Adams Stories was chosen for this new literacy initiative because Hemingway spent many of his first 22 summers in Northern Michigan which inspired several of the stories in the book; and,

Whereas, The importance of literacy and literature to our children and communities cannot be overstated, and the Great Michigan Read aims to disseminate the idea that reading is both fun and educational; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 27, 2007, as The Great Michigan Read Day in Michigan.
