Senior Center Month

Whereas, Michigan has more than 1.6 million residents who are age 60 and older; and,

Whereas, Michigan has senior centers in all of its 83 counties; and,

Whereas, Senior centers are focal points for older adult services and make valuable contributions to their communities; and,

Whereas, Senior centers serve as welcome centers that meet the needs of older adults and their caregivers; and,

Whereas, Senior centers serve as key community resources to promote older adult health and wellness and provide activities for socialization, enrichment and personal growth; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Association of Senior Centers provides a statewide forum for Michigan senior center professionals and advocates to work together; and,

Whereas, A new generation is looking to redefine retirement as a time for learning, creativity, personal growth and service to others; and,

Whereas, Senior centers are playing a vital role in this evolving definition of retirement; and,

Whereas, Senior Center Month is celebrated in Michigan and across the country every year; and,

Whereas, The theme of this year's Senior Center Month is "Senior Centers Work!"; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2007, as Senior Center Month.
