Whereas , Heat and high heat index values can cause a threat to the health and welfare of all Michigan citizens; and,
Whereas , Our Great Lakes State is not immune to these extreme warm weather temperatures and humidities; and,
Whereas , Each year countless people succumb to heat exhaustion and heat stroke which often goes unreported; and,
Whereas , The effects of heat and high heat index values are preventable simply through greater awareness of this threat; and,
Whereas , Our citizens should be aware of the simple but life saving information that can protect them from extreme heat; and,
Whereas , The National Weather Service, in cooperation with the Michigan Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, is educating the public about the dangers of extreme heat in Michigan; and now therefore be it,
Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 28, 2008, as Heat Awareness Day in Michigan, and I encourage all citizens to learn more about protecting themselves, their families, and their homes.
