Whereas , Summertime in Michigan offers warm days with plentiful sunshine and an abundance and variety of locally-grown, fresh fruits and vegetables; and,
Whereas , Farmers' markets, one of the oldest forms of direct marketing by small farmers, are a thriving marketplace for local farm products across our state; and,
Whereas , A rise in demand from consumers for locally-grown and processed products has led to an increase in the number of farmers' markets in Michigan from around 90 in 2001 to more than 170 today; and,
Whereas , Michigan's farmers grow more than 200 agricultural commodities, making Michigan the second-most agriculturally diverse state in the nation and generating $63.7 billion for the state's economy; and,
Whereas , Farmers' markets are at the forefront of the local food movement and provide easy access to fresh, healthy, locally-grown foods for all residents; and,
Whereas , Buying locally means consumers receive fresher, high quality foods, and these local purchases support area farmers, agri-businesses, rural communities, and Michigan's economy; and,
Whereas , If every Michigan household spent just $10 per week on Michigan-produced food, an added $37 million would circulate in our state's economy each week; and,
Whereas , Buying locally helps you know exactly where your food comes from; and,
Whereas , Visiting farmers' markets is a weekly ritual for many shoppers that helps to maintain a direct connection between farmers and consumers; and,
Whereas , Farmers, market masters, area craft artisans, and specialty food producers help maintain the tradition of farmers' markets as festive gathering places in our local communities - not just a place to buy food, but a social event; and,
Whereas , Selecting Michigan grown and processed foods helps our economy, strengthens Michigan's family farms, improves the quality of life for our citizens in both rural and urban areas, and preserves our state's rich and diverse agricultural heritage; and now therefore be it,
Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 2008 as Michigan Farmers' Market Month.
