Girls Lacrosse Day

Whereas , Native Americans began playing lacrosse more than 100 years before the first woman's game in 1890 at St. Leonards School in Scotland ; and,

Whereas , From the early games in Scotland, lacrosse traveled to other parts of England, Ireland, and Wales, finally crossing back to America in 1926 to the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore ; and,

Whereas , Lacrosse became a Michigan High School Athletic Association-recognized sport in 2005, and since this recognition, the sport has grown to include 50 varsity teams in Michigan; and,

Whereas , Lacrosse is a fast-paced game that, like other women's sports, helps boost self-confidence and develops sportsmanship, teamwork, and a positive self-image; and now therefore be it,

Resolved , That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 14, 2008, as Girls Lacrosse Day in Michigan.
