Whereas, Diabetes is one of the most common, complex and costly chronic conditions and is also one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States; and,
Whereas, The number of Michigan adults with diabetes has risen steadily since 1995. Today, over 685,200 Michigan adults have been diagnosed with diabetes, with an additional 356,100 adults who have yet to be diagnosed; and,
Whereas, Over 80 percent of people in Michigan with prediabetes are not aware they have the disease. Yet, it is estimated that over 2 million adults in Michigan have prediabetes, and 60 percent of them may develop type 2 diabetes within the next six years; and,
Whereas, The direct and indirect costs of diabetes is estimated at $7.9 billion per year for adults in Michigan and the cost of prediabetes is estimated at $1 billion per year; and,
Whereas, Approximately two in three people with diabetes have high blood pressure, and those with diabetes have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. People with diabetes who also use or have ever used tobacco have an increased risk of multiple complications, such as cardiovascular disease, retinopathy (or blindness), amputations and kidney disease; and,
Whereas, Obesity, being overweight and participating in little to no physical activity, contributes to the risk of diabetes. Moderate physical activity at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week significantly reduces the risk of diabetes in people with prediabetes; and,
Whereas, The Michigan Department of Community Health has a long standing commitment to prevent and control diabetes and will continue to partner with the Diabetes in Action Coalition to reach individuals and communities across the state;
Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 14, 2009, World Diabetes Day in Michigan. I call upon the people of Michigan to observe this day by being active, learning more about their risk of diabetes and other programs and activities that support this year's World Diabetes Day theme, "Diabetes Education and Prevention: Understand Diabetes and Take Control."
