GHB Awareness Month

Whereas, Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB) is an extremely dangerous and powerful depressant usually existing as a colorless, odorless and nearly tasteless liquid or powder; and,

Whereas, Small amounts of GHB can cause some people to relax and lose inhibitions resulting in its use as a date rape drug while others react with projectile vomiting and/or seizures; and,

Whereas, Larger amounts of the drug can cause unconsciousness, respiratory arrest, and death; and,

Whereas, Street names for GHB include, G, Gamma-OH, Liquid E, Liquid Ecstasy, Liquid X which is not the same as Ecstasy, Scoop, Water, Everclear, Blue Nitro, Georgia Home Boy, and Grievous Bodily Harm; and,

Whereas, GHB is a “homemade” drug, made from common household chemicals; and,

Whereas, GHB is highly addictive drug, and unlike other drugs does not correspond to body weight in its effects; and,

Whereas, The majority of GHB use is taken voluntarily by individuals such as bodybuilders and rave partygoers; and,

Whereas, The State of Michigan had enacted a GHB prohibition law during the 1990’s, however, on February 18, 2000, the “Hillory J. Farias and Samantha Reid Date Rape Drug Prohibition Act of 2000” was signed into law on the federal level as many other neighboring states had not yet criminalized the drug; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Department of Community Health, The Michigan Women’s Commission and The Samantha Reid Foundation, is observing March 2003, as GHB Awareness Month to help educate the public on the dangers of this ever increasing common drug; and now therefore be it

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 2003, as GHB Awareness Month in Michigan.
